Summary
This session introduces the cases where Hofstede 6D Model served as a solution to the diversity management and M&A of Japanese companies. 6D Model can provide us with a new understandings towards our “differences” and can serve as an effective management tool which brings fundamental change and breakthrough in conventional cross-cultural management.

Mikiko studied Spanish at Sophia University and later went on to earn her MBA from Hitotsubashi University. She started her career with USHIO Inc., a Japanese light industrial manufacturer, working in recruiting and training. She then moved to ACCESS, a Japanese software company, pursuing joint development / promotional programs with various third parties. Her extensive overseas living experience (Denmark, Spain, South Korea & the UK) has served her well at CICOM BRAINS where she develops training programs for emerging markets and multi-national staff of Japanese companies.

Leadership issues in virtual and remote environments

Summary
Today, we are working more often across physical borders/time zones and cultures under global virtual projects, taking the advents of remote communication technologies. How can we work effectively with people from different cultures, having different communication styles and different approaches to decision making? This session is intended to discuss challenges and provides helpful know-hows/tips to lead people effectively in remote and virtual environments and across cultures.

After earning a Master of Science degree at Delft University of Technology, Ralf worked for large multinational companies as Vodafone, IBM and Shell in the Netherlands and Japan. At itim Ralf focuses on Intercultural Project Management. Intercultural Project Management combines Hofstede’s intercultural model, itim’s Remote Leadership course and personal experience to prepare project managers for understanding the importance of culture in a world where project teams become more and more international, diverse and physically separated.

Before joining itim, Mari worked in Human Resources for Japanese operations of different multicultural companies, hiring, training, coaching, facilitating and developing talent and leaders of high calibre and different national cultures for 20 years. Her experience include Learning & Development Director at Bayer Yakuhin, a Japanese subsidiary of German conglomerate Bayer's pharmaceutical and healthcare division, as well as Recruiting & Learning Director at QVC Japan, a Japanese subsidiary of American TV-shopping/multi-platform retailer. Mari obtained a B.A. degree in the Spanish Language and Hispanic Studies from Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan, and an M.B.A. degree from Columbia Business School, USA. She also taught Human Resources and Organizational Behavior for 12 years at Globis Business School, Osaka, Japan.
